EXERCISE TO REDUCE STRESS

No matter our age, whether we are athletic or not, staying active, strong and flexible helps maintain our physical and mental health. Life is so much better when we can move without pain. Trends show that since the pandemic, people are focusing on the mental health benefits exercise provides, as much as the physical ones. Regular aerobic exercise including walking offers multiple health benefits. In addition to improving our metabolism and heart health, it can both exhilarate and relax us, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

According to a Harvard Health article, “exercise reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators.”

Massage Therapy and exercise make good partners keeping the body/mind connection strong. Treatments address physical issues that are often exacerbated by stress patterns. A one hour massage lowers cortisol, a hormone released when we are stressed. It also releases serotonin, a hormone neurotransmitter known as the “happy chemical” as it reduces feelings of depression. By lowering cortisol and increasing serotonin, we boost our body’s ability to fight off pain, anxiety and feelings of sadness.

Make the most of your summer and enjoy “pain free” movement and renewed vitality.
