Ever wonder why it is so hard to let ourselves “just be”.
We are always multi-tasking, adding to an already too long, to do list. Many of us feel uncomfortable when we take time out, mentally listing all our “to do’s”.
Feeling productive activates the release of the neurotransmitter, known as dopamine. It increases our heart rate and blood pressure, stimulates our nervous system and is widely recognized as our pleasure regulator. This may be one of the reasons why we push ourselves to do more and relax less.
As with all good things, too much busyness eventually makes us less productive and has a fatiguing effect on both our body and mind. Pushing past this fatigue on a regular basis can lead to serious repercussions and illness.
Relaxation allows our body to repair and replenish our energy. It can even improve our sleep patterns. Not everyone is capable of “doing nothing”. For them, slow walks in greenery, massage and activities that detract from pressure also help to recharge.
It’s a constant push and pull, isn’t it? Staying productive in order to keep our life moving and on track, but listening to our body and consciously taking the time we need to rest and relax. Balance can be hard to master. Our suggestion is to reserve time in your calendar for rest, so that you can honour it and look forward to it. Booking a massage or spa treatment is a great way to do that.
