Have you ever been inspired to start exercising more but then get discouraged when pain prevents you from continuing? Sometimes it’s because we try to do too much too fast, but not always. Most of the time, it’s due to old injuries that we may not have paid much attention to, or even remember experiencing.
Our body has made countless repairs over time due to a fall on the stairs or a twist of an ankle. None bad enough to slow us down at the time. Others, have caused lasting compensatory patterns that cause pain and tension intermittently.
Years ago, racing to a meeting, I almost slipped and fell on ice. I swung out my left arm to counter balance and avoided the fall. I quickly recovered from the near miss, but certain activities still remind me of that experience.
Our body is a master fixer. It is quick to lay down scar tissue when we tear or break something. Once “healed” we may not notice anything but, as we age, these repairs can haunt us. Scar tissue is an effective tool, but it is not as flexible as muscle tissue. In our 40’s, changes start to occur to our bones, tendons and muscles. These alterations can make our body less forgiving. They require us to do more or change our activities to maintain our desired health. Exercise, diet and stress reduction solutions are the most recognized trends today.
“One size fits all” is not the best motto when choosing an Active Health routine. To prevent injury it is best to work under the guidance of an expert. A workout that is tailored to your body’s needs can achieve strength, flexibility, increased energy and allow you to enjoy a greater sense of well being.
Massage Therapy is effective as both a health maintenance and preventative practice. Most of our clients, come for treatments citing relief of pain and tension in specific areas. They are surprised when the therapist uncovers discomfort in another area that may be contributing to their problem. The benefits derived from Massage Therapy of reduced scar tissue and improved flow of nutrient rich circulation helps to keep our body strong and flexible. It is a useful “partner” to help ensure success with your active health routine.
Our Active Health Department is growing. We are pleased to offer Pilates, Massage and Movement, Fascial Stretch Therapy and our newest addition, Feldenkrais.
