Social commitments and work deadlines can leave little time for rest and regeneration. Taking time to unwind and recharge is important to our wellbeing. Relaxation helps to lessen our muscle tension, has a positive impact on our digestion, lowers our blood pressure, heart rate and increases blood flow to our brain. It also helps to improve our emotional state and mood.
Much has been written about the benefits of staying socially connected, but we also need “time out” to keep in balance. Taking time to enjoy a good book, movie or a quiet walk in nature helps us find our Zen moment, a peaceful state of being.
