THE SUMMER EFFECT

By August 1, 2019 August 3rd, 2019 Health & Wellness

Ever wonder why we love summer?

It turns out that sunlight increases the serotonin levels in our brains which makes us happier. It also provides us with our main source of Vitamin D, a necessity to slow down aging, improve immunity and our resistance to disease.

While August is a beautiful month, it also signals that our summer is nearing it’s end. It feels fleeting from the start, and we tend to pack in as much fun and time outdoors as we possibly can. The risk is that we can find ourselves focusing only on the coming weekend or the next fun adventure, ultimately keeping us from enjoying the present moment.

Opportunities for wonderful experiences are always around us. When we think only of the future we lose touch with these possibilities. It’s like walking in a beautiful garden and the busyness of our minds keeps us from seeing the beauty. It also prevents us from being our most creative at our work.

So how can we savour summer in the middle of our normal routine? How can we bask in it during the work week?

First we must recognize and acknowledge the moment and then experience it. Only then can we find joy in now.

Here are some tips for Being Present This Summer

  1. Summer markets bring us a bounty of fresh local produce. These veggies and fruits have more nutritional value than those arriving from other countries. Enjoy it! Take the time to cook with it and experience all the flavours of summer.
  2. Practise a “walking meditation”, especially helpful to those who find peace in action and prefer to let their minds wander. Open your senses to the sights, sounds and aromas. Connect with nature. Scientists continue to find that being in nature has a profound impact on our brains and our behavior. It helps us to reduce anxiety, brooding, and stress.
  3. Find time for distraction free moments, connecting to your body. Turn off your phone and take a walk in the park, a guided Pilates session or a body treatment like Massage Therapy. Lose yourself in the experience.

Make the season we would all love last a little longer and join us for a soothing summer treatment.
